Best Dance Classes in Lisbon: Your Ultimate Guide for 2024 (part 2)

Learning how to dance with a partner is not only a fantastic way to meet new people but also to share your passion for dance. With a variety of styles like Salsa, Tango, Ballroom, and Swing, partner dancing opens up a world of rhythm, coordination, and social interaction.

In this part 2,  we will be focusing specifically on couple dances and social dancing, tailored for pairs rather than individual dancers.

Please note: The classes listed in this guide are based on my personal experiences. As I am not primarily a couple dancer, my journey in dance has involved minimal time training in these styles. Therefore, this list may not be as detailed as Part 1

  • Two Left Feet - Salsa & Bachata Sensual Classes

Level: Beginner

Sign up: here

I consider this to be Lisbon's most popular social dancing meet-up group, ideal for those eager to delve into the vibrant salsa and bachata scenes. Founded by Marco Nova, an Argentine expat with a deep passion for travel, languages, dance, and diverse cultures, he fosters a warm and welcoming atmosphere. His classes, known for their fun and easy-to-follow approach, offer a unique opportunity to connect with both locals and expats, enriching your dance skills and social network in Lisbon.

  • Salsa - Bachata

Level: from Beginner to Advance

Location: Jazzy Dance Studio - they have 4 different locations in Lisbon - the one I normally go is Santos - very close to Cais do Sore. More info here

Or Udance Studio - more info here

Salsa or Bachata classes are a staple at Jazzy, reflecting the significant role of social dancing in Portuguese culture. This makes it easy to find a class that matches your skill level. I recommend signing up for a trial class to gauge where you fit in. While most salsa classes at Jazzy are bustling with enthusiasts, which might seem overwhelming at first, the welcoming and friendly atmosphere is ideal for newcomers. Don't worry if you're not fluent in Portuguese; feel free to ask questions. The teachers are approachable, helpful, and eager to assist you in your dance journey.

U-dance Studio, Lisbon's newest dance school, has been making waves in the city's dance community for just over a year. Offering a diverse range of couple dances like salsa and bachata, U-dance provides a less intimidating environment compared to more established studios like Jazzy. The classes here tend to have more balanced skill levels, making it an excellent choice for those new to dancing. While classes are primarily conducted in Portuguese, which might be slightly confusing for non-speakers, don't hesitate to ask questions. The teachers are friendly and accommodating. Engaging in these classes could also serve as a great incentive to learn Portuguese, helping you integrate more seamlessly into Lisbon's vibrant lifestyle.

  • Swing Dance

Level: Beginner to Advance

Location: Blue Swing Lisbon or Swing Station

Swing dance, a lively and joyful dance style, originated in the 1920s and 1930s alongside the swing style of jazz music. Known for its bouncy, energetic rhythm, Swing dance encompasses a variety of styles like the Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Jitterbug, each characterized by playful movements and a spirited tempo. This dance form is all about improvisation and interaction with a partner, making it not only a physical activity but also a social one. Swing dancing is often marked by its upbeat music, high-energy spins, lifts, and jumps, making it a favorite for those who love to combine energetic movement with the exhilarating sounds of jazz.

Those 2 dance schools offer a variety of classes that you can join and explore if this dance style is for you. Just come with an open mind, you will meet many people and learn some cool moves.

  • Kizomba

Level: from Beginner to Advance

Location: Jazzy Dance Studio - they have 4 different locations in Lisbon - the one I normally go is Santos - very close to Cais do Sore. More info here

Or Udance Studio - more info here

Kizomba, a dance that originated in Angola in the 1980s, is a mesmerizing blend of African rhythm and dance influences with a touch of Latin elements. Characterized by its smooth, close movements and romantic feel, Kizomba is often referred to as the "African tango." This dance style is distinguished by a slower, sensual rhythm that emphasizes connection and fluidity between partners, creating an intimate and synchronized dance experience. The music, a fusion of traditional Angolan semba and zouk rhythms, sets the stage for a deeply expressive form of movement.

Kizomba is among the most popular couple dances in Portugal, making it an intriguing option for many to try. While I am personally not a big fan, I’ve included it here for you to explore – you might just find it resonates perfectly with your rhythm.

Here are our top four recommended couple dance styles in Lisbon. If you're new to the city, these classes are a perfect way to meet people and learn something new. For those setting goals in 2024 to pick up new hobbies, we hope this guide helps you find your way to get out of your comfort zone.
